What to Expect |
What to Expect During Treatment SightLine’s nurse will position you on a table inside the MRI scanner and will give you a mild sedative to help you relax and to alleviate any potential discomfort. Throughout MRgFUS, you will lie on your stomach and you will remain conscious with the nurse by your side. The MRI table used in MRgFUS contains the ultrasound transducer, which emits the ultrasound waves that will destroy your uterine fibroids. During the procedure, your doctor will carefully readjust the transducer to ensure the ultrasound beams are precisely focused on specific areas of your fibroids. The procedure lasts between two and three hours. During that time, a nurse will be by your side to be sure you remain comfortable. Your doctor will be in an adjoining room, monitoring the treated area through MRI images and applying the ultrasound energy remotely. You will be able to maintain constant communication with your physician. You will also be provided with a handheld device that will allow you to easily stop the procedure if you become uncomfortable at any time. Once the treatment is completed, you will be asked to rest in the SightLine clinic for one to three hours to ensure the effect of the sedative has worn off. You may experience some slight cramping or nausea, which can typically be treated with over-the-counter medication. Most women are able to resume normal activity within one day. Eligibility SightLine’s physicians can help you determine if you are a candidate for MRgFUS. If you are not a candidate, our physicians can also guide you to the best procedure for your needs.
